Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 30-04-2012

Fé 13 Peil Championship 2012
Our 2012 Championship season kicked off last Wednesday evening as we welcomed the boys from Russell Rovers to Páirc Uí Chinnéide, to contest the opening round of the Fé 13 Football campaign. With a high wind blowing up the field, we anticipated a game of two halves - our visitors had the advantage in the opening half and made good use of it, picking off some fine points and also shooting below the bar. That said, we fought bravely and when we did manage to work our way up the field, through the strong wind and our opponents, we were rewarded with two superb, well taken goals, However, the Rovers then had the luck of converting a penalty on the stroke of half time, leaving the midway score 4-5 to 2-0.
Blown back into action (no pun intended), we got off to a flying start as we opened the scoring with a superb goal from the boot of Keane Kelly Budds. However our opponents decided to play a defensive game and packed their backline, thus making it near impossible for us to break through. On the counter-attack, they secured a further 1-2 to their tally, which was enough to see them through to the next round with Kiltha Óg. We bowed out, on a scoreline of 5-7 to 3-0. Many thanks to Brinsley and Seán for their work with this team since the beginning of the year - no rewards this year, ach "tiochfaidh bhúr lá"! Our Fé 13 Hurling League will commence shortly, so get practicing!!

League Updates:
Our older boys contested more league games this past week as our Minors, Fé 15 hurlers, our Fé 16 footballers and our Fé 14 hurlers all togged out and contested bravely. Our minors travelled to Cloyne and secured a fine win over the boys in Black and Red. Our Fé 15 hurlers and Fé 16 footballers both welcomed the lads from Carrigaline to our home sod. Our hurlers had a good win after a very competitive game and secured the points but our footballers were defeated on a wild blustery Sunday morning last. Our Fé 14 Hurling lads travelled to Douglas on Sunday last and secured a fine win over the home side.

Fé 12 Iomáint
Mixed fortunes for our Fé 12 hurlers in the past week, with games in both the Rebel Óg and West Waterford Leagues. On Saturday 21st, we hosted Russell Rovers in the opening game of the Rebel Óg Iomáint and put in a storming second half performance to win by 5-1 to 2-1, with Padraig Leahy doing most of the scoring. On Saturday 28th we travelled go dtí an Rinn sa Ghaeltacht i bPort Láirge, agus bhí cluiche íontach againn. With the Atlantic gales blowing the sliotar uphill, the game ebbed and flowed, and at the final whistle, we were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a 2-point defeat - 2-4 to 2-2. However, the hurling is improving every week, and so is the competitiveness of this team. Next up it's St. Catherine's on Wednesday 2nd in the Rebel Óg league, and then off to Aglish to play St. Oliver's(Aglish / Ballinameela) on Sunday 13th @ 11.00. In between these two fixtures we travel to Kilmurry for football on Saturday 5th @ 11.00 a.m. and host Passage in Killeagh on Friday 11th @ 6.30 p.m.

Kelloggs Cúl Camp:
Our Annual Summer Camp will be taking place in Pairc Uí Chinnéide on July 9th, 10th 11th & 12th. Application forms and information will be available through the schools in the coming week.

Fixtures:
Thursday May 3rd Fé 14 Football League v Ballinora in Killeagh @ 7.00 p.m.
Saturday May 5th Fé 15 Football League v Donoughmore in Killeagh @ 12.00 noon
Fé 12 Football League v Kilmurry in Kilmurry @ 11.00 a.m

Keep an eye on the posters for changes or additions!!

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 09-04-2012

Fé 14 Iomáint
Our Fé 14 hurlers made the short trip to Shanagarry on Easter Sunday to take on Russell Rovers in round 1 of Féile 2012. Playing against the wind a swift start saw us take control of the game as full forward and captain Andrew Leahy bagged 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes. David Ogbebor added another shortly after and with our backs playing well and supplying quality ball to the forward line we dominated the first half to lead by 5-06 to 0-07 at half time. The second half continued in a similar vein with Andrew striking for another goal early on which was followed up with further green flags by Jamie Landers, Christy Coughlan and a stunning ground stroke from David Ogbebor to round off a comprehensive victory. This was an excellent team performance with our full back line dealing with everything that came their way. Kevin Murphy was solid at No. 6 while both Cathal Deane and Christy Coughlan worked hard at midfield. The under 13 duo of Keane Budds and Daniel Hickey worked tirelessly on the wings to supply the chances for our goal scoring full forward line. Well done to all. The reward for our win is a second round match at home next weekend to the winners of the match between St. Finbarr's and Seandrum.

Fé 11 Peil agus Iomáint
Our AA-sponsored (!!) Under 11s continued their busy run of fixtures with plenty of mileage clocked up in the past eight days. On Saturday March 31st 19 players made the 120-mile round trip to Dunmanway to take on Sam Maguires in our fifth series of football games in the Rebel Óg Central League. While both of our teams were beaten, we saw great effort and improved teamwork from both sides, and some fine scores as well. Liam Hoogstad, Robert Sinclair and Cathal Fitzgibbon stood out, but credit is due to all those, over and under 11, who travelled to the heart of west Cork, including our reiteoir, Brendan. On Wednesday April 4th, we headed east to Abbeyside to play our inaugural game in the West Waterford U11 Hurling League. On a very cold night, we struggled to get any fluency to our game and were beaten by 3-6 to 1-2, in spite of good efforts from George Sinclair, Daniel Lucey and Olan Broderick. On Easter Saturday morning we once again headed west to the Ballyanly Sports Complex, home of Inniscarra GAA, to play our first games in the Rebel Óg Fé 11 Central Hurling League. One of our teams had a comprehensive victory, with Robbie Treacy and Darragh O'Connor leading the scoring charge, and Aaron O'Connell very safe in goals. Our other team were unlucky not to secure all two points as they drew with Inniscarra on a scoreline of 3-4 to 4-1, with Dara Motherway and Paul Delaney to the fore, and Cian McDonald very solid at the back. Next up it's Ballincollig in the hurling league, which, thankfully, is a home fixture. Many thanks to all those who drove the long distances in the past week, it's great that the GAA mileage rates are so generous!!

Fé 12 Peil
Our Under 12 footballers played their first two Eastern Region League games in the past week. On Monday 2nd we hosted Kiltha Óg and unfortunately were well beaten. On Saturday last we travelled to Mayfield and gave a much better account of ourselves, although we again ended up pointless, losing out on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-5. Nonetheless, the graph is going in the right direction, so keep up the good work boys! A special mention to our three Under 11's Cian, Karl and Dara who headed straight from Inniscarra to tog out again in Mayfield, and help their Under 12 team to a creditable performance.

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 26-03-2012

Fé 14 Premier 1 Hurling League
On Saturday last we welcomed the boys of Blarney to Páirc Uí Chinnéide to contest our opening Fé 14 hurling league game. Both teams took their time to settle into this game and to get to know their opponents, thus we witnessed an opening twelve minutes of scoreless play. Blarney were first to split the posts and raise a white flag, while Aaron Walsh quickly followed suit for the Killeagh-Ita's boys. We extended our lead as David Ogbebor found the Blarney net for the game's first goal. With little or nothing between these two teams, Blarney secured two more white flags to keep in touch. The remainder of this half saw both teams give it their all and exchange scores evenly at either end of the field, thus leaving the scoreboard 1-3 apiece at the short whistle. We got a dream start to the second half, securing points from the camáns of Christy and Aaron, and David raising his second green flag of the day. Blarney began to dominate now and made good use of the wind that favoured them and they secured a brace of unanswered points to level matters, 2-5 to 1-8 heading into the closing quarter. Disaster struck for the Killeagh-Ita's lads as our ever solid centre back, Kevin had to retire from the field of play with a shoulder injury. Blarney finished out the game the stronger, more accurate side and were rewarded with the two league points on a 2-12 to 2-5 scoreline.

Fé 16 Premier 1 Football League:
Our Fé 16 squad travelled to the city on Saturday afternoon to contest our third game in this Premier 1 League against the Douglas lads. Minus a few key players, we lined out and bravely fought the challenge. Playing with the aid of a slight breeze in the opening half, we held our own and kept in touch with a stronger more physical Douglas side. Despite some good passages of play and some nice points we still trailed 1-8 to 0-6 at the break. On the turn around, we found we had an uphill battle on our hands, playing against the breeze and with the Douglas lads getting a dream start of an early goal and a duo of points. However when Shane Smiddy stepped up and struck home our awarded penalty, we saw a glimmer of hope. Alas, this was short lived as the Douglas boys took control and held us at bay for the remainder of the game, outplaying and out-scoring us, and gaining the league points on a final score of 4-17 to 1-7.

Fé 11 Peil
No joy for our young Fé 11 footballers at both ends of this past week. On Bank Holiday Monday we welcomed Valley Rovers to Páirc Uí Chinnéide where they outplayed us in both games to take full points in the Central League. On Saturday 23 boys made the long journey to Mallow to take on the local team. This was to be also a 2-game fixture but our hosts were short numbers so we ended up playing one game. This made things tricky for our management who had to rotate our players to give everyone plenty of game time, and unsettled our team also, undoubtedly. As a result, Mallow dominated after the opening 10 minutes, which were very even, and had recorded a comprehensive victory by the end. Well done to our boys for keeping going until the final whistle, and many thanks to the parents who made the long trip. Next Saturday we head to the 'home of football' in Dunmanway to play the club with the most famous name in Ireland - "Sam Maguires" in a high noon showdown.

Rebel Óg Féile Peil (Fé 14) 2012
Chuamar ar turas fada ar an mbus go dtí an Bóthar Buí ar an Domhnach seo caite. Nineteen boys left their Mammies behind on Mother's Day as they headed for Boherbue in Paul's bus for the first round clash in the Féile Peil Fé 14 A Championship. Having lost to Passage in midweek in the League by 3 points, we needed to get a good start to boost the confidence levels. However, we didn't get off to a good start and by half time we were chasing the game, having conceded scores heavily. However, our second-half performance was much improved and even though we lost out by eight points in the end, we competed creditably, and on another day might have had a greater reward. Jack O'Rourke and Luke Fogarty fought manfully in the full-back line, Kevin Murphy played a lot of ball at midfield, while Daniel Hickey and Shane Kearney did most damage up front. It's not often you score 7-8 and lose (although Dublin's hurlers did manage to score 6-12 against Kilkenny and still lose), so no shame in defeat in this one. An scór ag an deireadh: Boherbue 9-10, Killeagh-Ita's 7-8. Mar focal scoir, we had a tremendous reception from our host club Boherbue, who pulled out all the stops in making us feel welcome, and had a great spread of food for us after the game. We hope to be able to welcome Boherbue to Páirc Uí Chinnéide at some stage to repay the compliment.
Panel: Padraig McCarthy, Jack O'Rourke, Luke Fogarty, Fergal Smiddy, Eoin Fitzgibon, Emmet Barron, Christy Coughlan, Cathal Deane, Kevin Murphy, Jamie Landers, Aaron Walsh, Keane Kelly Budds, Daniel Hickey, Andrew Leahy, Sean Broderick, Shane Kearney, Fionn McDonnell, Jamie Clifford, Sean Walsh.

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 12-03-2012

Seachtain na Gaeilge - bígí ag caint!
This is "Seachtain na Gaeilge" so bain triail as an "cúpla focal" ins na laethanta atá romhainn. Bhíomar an-ghnóthach i bPáirc Uí Chinnéide i rith na seachtaine seo caite, go mór mhór faoi na soilse in ár "Páirc na mBrionglóid". Our pitches were very busy this past week, particularly our very own "Field of Dreams". Whoever it was coined that phrase "If you build it they will come" must have had our new floodlit pitch in mind - how did we ever manage without it?

JBM - from Páirc Uí Chinnéide to Páirc an Chrócaigh!
Irish people of a certain vintage loved JFK, Arsenal fans love RVP, Chelsea players didn't love AVB, but in Cork we love JBM above anyone else. So it was an honour and a privilege to welcome JBM to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Friday evening last to present medals to our victorious Fé 15 and Fé 13 squads of 2011. As our complex filled up with our Fé 15 winning County Premier 1 Hurling lads, our Fé 13 County League Plate and Tournament winners, parents, grandparents, mentors, distinguished guests, the scene was set for a great night of celebrations. Our Juvenile Chairman, Adrian opened the evening, by welcoming us all and introducing our special guests: Jimmy Barry Murphy, County P.R.O, Tracey Kennedy, Adult Club Chairmen, Tim Crotty and Sean Harnedy, Club Presidents John Prendergast and Sean Treacy and St. Ita's secretary, Shane Supple. We had some excellent speeches from our Club chairman, Tim Crotty, St.Ita's Secretary, Shane Supple, and then the man himself, Jimmy Barry Murphy.
Declan Galvin and Alan Curran introduced our Fé 13 lads and Jimmy did the honours of presenting them with their medals. Mark Landers then gave a great speech and run down of the fantastic year that the Fé 15 lads had in the run up to the County Final. Before introducing them to us, he thanked and surprised our Secretary, Ursula, by asking his wing man, Andy to present her with a well-deserved lovely bouquet of flowers. Rapturous applause rang out as Mark introduced our Fé 15 winning panel and Jimmy Barry Murphy presented each one with their Rebel Óg medals. All present enjoyed the chat and banter afterwards as we enjoyed the light refreshments served. We would like to take this opportunity to convey our thanks to all who helped make this night a great success. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.

Rebel Óg Fé 14 Peil
On Monday evening last our Fé 14 lads hosted the boys of Russell Rovers, in what turned out to be a game of two halves. Our visitors got off to a flying start and had registered 1-3 on the board before Aaron Walsh raised a white flag for us. The Rovers again took off on a scoring spree and added a further 2-2 to their tally and all we replied with were two more white flags from the boots of Aaron and Jamie, to leave the half time tally 3-5 to 0-3 in favour of the Rovers.
Having realised we did not play to our full potential and after receiving a good pep talk, we returned to the field of play with more heart and determination and succeeded in getting a dream start as Daniel Hickey found the Rovers net. This set us up for a mighty comeback, with only two kicks of the ball between the sides. Playing some good football now and connecting better as a team, we secured a further 1-1 before our opposition registered their first score of this half. We continued to eat into the Rovers lead and had levelled the game with a further goal from Keane Kelly Budds and two more white flags from Aaron, without reply from our opponents. The closing few minutes were frantic as both teams gave it their all to cross that winning line, with both teams adding 3 points each until the final whistle sounded. The league points were divided between us as a tally of 3-9 each was recorded.

Rebel Óg Fé 13 agus Fé 15 Peil
On Wednesday evening we welcomed the Fé 13 and Fé 15 panels of St. Vincent's GAA to Pairc Uí Chinnéide, for Rebel Óg 'A' Eastern football league games. First to the field were our Fé 13 boys. We had the upper hand in the opening half of this contest and it reflected on the score board as the short whistle sounded, Killeagh-Ita's 2-6 to St. Vinvent's 0-1. Within ten minutes of the second half St. Vincent's had had eaten into our tally with a 2-1 scoreline - they were back into the contest. We had to pull up our socks, and we did, as Shane Kearney found the net and shortly afterwards, Shane shot home his second goal as the ball hit the upright and fell into his path. Both teams defended well and exchanged scores before we secured a late goal to secure our first league points: Killeagh-Ita's 5-9 to St. Vincent's 2-4.
Next up, faoi na soilse, were our Fé 15 lads. This was a cracking game of football, with both sides giving it their all from the throw in, defending well and finding the range at both ends of the field. The sides were level after twenty minutes of play, 1-2 to 0-5. This looked set to continue until the half time whistle as both teams continued to exchange points, two each, until David Ogbebor found the Vincent's net to give us a slight advantage at the break: Killeagh-Ita's 2-4 to Vincents 0-7. We continued to enjoy a great game of football sa dara leath, with little or nothing between the sides throughout. Midway through this half, both teams were deadlocked on a tally of 2-7 apiece. We entered the closing stages full of hope as did our opponents. With time on the clock ticking and both teams finding the target with goals and points at a frantic pace, it was anyone's game. Alas as the final whistle sounded it was the lads of St. Vincent's who had outscored us in the closing few minutes to take the league points, on a scoreline of 4-9 to 3-8. Well done to both teams and their mentors.

Rebel Óg Fé 16 Peil
On Saturday last we travelled to the city to contest this Rebel Óg Central Premier 1 football league with the lads of St. Michael's in Mahon. We were a little out of our depth here and minus a few key players, we came up against one of the finest football side in the County. Both teams began well but as the city boys settled in better on home turf and began to dominate the run of play, we knew we would live to regret the two goal chances we kicked inches wide and the missed penalty that also went astray. However we battled on and secured a trio of nice points before the short whistle sounded, leaving us 4-4 to 0-3 adrift at the break. As they say "goals win matches", this however went in favour of our opponents on the day. Cian Greene added a trio of points and Dan Smiddy kicked a beauty for us in the second half, but alas we came away empty handed as St. Michaels had it sewn up from early on

Fé 14 Iomáint sa Déise
Our Fé 14 hurlers travelled across the border into Déise territory to take part in the annual Lismore blitz on Saturday 10th March. Our opponents were fellow East Cork teams Fr. O'Neills and Carrigtwohill along with the host club. Our first game was against Carrigtwohill. A very poor first half performance saw us trail by 2-04 to 1-00. A much improved second half showing saw us draw level with 2 minutes to play but alas the comeback ended there as Carrig lifted the siege and broke out to score 1.01 in the remaining time to run out winners by 4 points on a score line of 3-05 to 3-01. Fr. O'Neills were our next opponents. The first half was evenly contested with Killeagh-Ita's shading it at the break by 2-01 to 1-02. The second half saw us pull away to win comfortably on a score line of 3-06 to 1-03. We approached our final game against Lismore knowing that only a win would do to give us a chance of qualifying for the final. Lismore started quickly and had 2-01 scored before we got the ball into their half. When we did succeed in launching an attack disaster struck as Killian Treacy had to retire following a nasty finger injury. Our boys battled on however and trailed at the break by 3-02 to 2-00. The home side continued to make the running in the second half and finished as winners by 4-05 to 3-00 to put an end to our hopes of making the final. Thanks to the Lismore club for their hospitality on the day and also to the parents who travelled to the games to transport and support our boys. Following the game it emerged that Killian Treacy's finger injury was a serious one which will keep him out for a while. We all wish Killian a speedy recovery and hope to see him back terrorising full back lines again in the not too distant future!

Rebel Óg Fé 11 Peil
Week 2 in our Fé 11 league saw us host Mainistir na Corann on Saturday last for two cracking games of end-to-end football. With both teams having two 11-a-side teams, an 11.00 throw in was apt! In Game 1 Killeagh got off to a flying start and were 2-2 to 0-0 ahead before Midleton came storming in to the game and rattled of 3-2 very quickly to hold a slender half-time lead. The second half was very similar with both teams playing wonderful attacking football, with quality scores over and under the bar at both ends. Ag deireadh an chluiche, ní raibh ach cúilín amháin idir na fóirne, ach bhí an bua ag Mainistir na Corann - 6-5 i gcoinne 5-7. Paul Delaney, the Sinclair brothers and Ben O'Connor played exceptionally well for us, but in truth all of our team played their hearts out. In Game 2, scores were harder to come by, but we held a slender 2 point lead at half time and in the second half finally managed to get the scores our play deserved. We finished ahead by 3-6 to 2-2 when reiteoir Breandán Ó Dubhshlánnaigh blew the final whistle. Daniel Daly, Robbie Treacy and goalkeeper Dan Beechinor were exceptional, but once again it is heartening to report that this really was a whole-team effort. Next up we welcome Valley Rovers on Monday March 19th for a high noon showdown!

Upcoming Fixtures:
Wednesday 14th Fé 14 Football League v Passage in Killeagh @ 7.00 p.m.
Sunday 18th Fé 14 Football Feile v Boherbue in Boherbue @ 4.00 p.m.
Monday 19th Fé 11 Football League v Valley Rovers in Killeagh @ 12 noon

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 05-03-2012

Rebel Óg Fé 11 Peil
Our young U-11 footballers began what will no doubt be a hectic campaign (league games in football and hurling every Saturday for the next 16 weeks) by welcoming our nearest neighbours Kiltha Óg to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Saturday morning last. The format for this league is that each club has 2 teams (9, 10 or 11-a-side), with league points going for each game. We began very well in Game 1 and led by 3-0 to 0-3 at half time, with our goalkeeper David Kelly and our backs George Sinclair, Daniel Lucey, Paul Delaney and Karl O'Toole well on top, and Robert Sinclair (2) and Olan Broderick raising green flags. However, the half-time break did us no favours as we were outclassed in the second half and eventually lost out on a scoreline of 5-5 to 3-0. In Game 2 we got some fine scores from Jonathan Guerin and Cathal Fitzgibbon, among others, and Dan Beechinor made some fine saves, but we finished second best in this one as well, going down by 6-9 to 2-4. A bit of work to be done, then, but nonetheless we have many positives as well. Next up we welcome Midleton on Saturday March 10th @ 11.00.

Rebel Óg Fé 15 A Peil
At high noon on Sunday last we welcomed the lads of Whitechurch to Pairc Uí Chinnéide, to compete with us in the Fé 15 A Football League. Our visitors, playing with a strong breeze, got into an early three point lead before Darragh O Brien levelled matters for us with a well-placed goal. This pattern was repeated in the closing stages of this first half, as again our visitors gained back the lead, with a further three white flags before the Killeagh/Ita's boys again raised a lone green one, this time from the boot of Padraig Delaney. Whitechurch scored again and thus held the minimum advantage at the short whistle: Whitechurch 0-7 to Killeagh-Ita's 2-0.
On the resumption, Dan Landers levelled matters as he split the posts and raised our first white flag of the game. It was tit-for-tat in the next few minutes, as both teams exchanged points to remain on level terms. We took the lead for the first time in the game as Padraig again found the range, but this was short lived as our visitors had adjusted well playing against the breeze and shot one past our excellent keeper to raise their only green flag of the day, placing them in the driving seat once more. With the excitement mounting and the minutes on the clock ticking, we were again shot into the lead as Jack O' Rourke found the Whitechurch net for our third goal of the game. The closing stages were eagerly fought by both teams who were encouraged on by their supporters but alas it was the boys in yellow and maroon who finished out this contest with more gusto and accurate shooting, hitting four unanswered points to take the league points. Bhí cúl idir na fóirne ag an deireadh - Whitechurch 1-12, Killeagh-Ita's 3-3.

Rebel Óg Minor A Peil
Ar a cúig a chlog, d'fhilleamar ar ais go Pairc Uí Chinnéide to play host to the men of Aghabullogue, for this Rebel Og minor football league fixture. Under the watchful eye of Maurice Mulcahy we were blown into action. This was a quick-paced, physical game, with scores hard to come by. The opening twenty minutes had both teams on each other's heels, with both teams on level pegging at three points apiece. At this point Matthew Murphy (great to see him back from injury) gave us a little breathing space as he found the back of the Aghabullogue net. Our visitors responded by raising three white flags to again level matters as the short whistle sounded: Killeagh-Ita's 1-3 to Aghabullogue 0-6.
A strange second half provided us with the same pace and physicality but left both teams scoreless and still deadlocked, until David Cahill raised a white flag for us in the eighteenth minute. We held this narrow lead and would not have been surprised if it was to be the only score of the half. With five minutes remaining on the clock, Matthew stepped up and secured a free for our second point to increase our lead to two points. Aghabullogue fought well for that all important goal for victory but we stood firm and they could only muster a point on the stroke of full time. Killeagh-Ita's had prevailed by the narrowest of margins, and in the process secured the league points, on a 1-5 to 0-7 scoreline.

Presentation Night
On Friday next, March 9th, we will present our victorious Fé 13 & Fé 15 winning teams of 2011 with their medals. This will take place in our G.A.A complex at 6.45 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and all are welcome to come and listen to one of the truly great GAA icons, Jimmy Barry Murphy, who is our guest of honour for this celebration. We hope he will inspire young and not so young for the challenges that lie ahead. Bígí ann!

No joy for U-13's
A depleted Under 13 squad made the long but interesting journey along the Lee Valley to Coachford on Saturday last to play Aghabullogue in Round 3 of the Eastern Fé 13 Football League. Despite taking an early lead we soon began to leak goals and unfortunately were well behind at half-time. However, a better second-half performance was encouraging - keep up the good effort boys!

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 20-02-2012

Indoor Hurling finals go down to the wire!
Drama aplenty last Monday night at the finals of our Fé 12 Indoor Hurling League. Barry Motherway's Blue Team and Dylan Hogan's Orange Team contested the Group 1 Final, and in the best game of the whole season, sudden death Golden Goal was required after the sides finished level in normal time. This sudden death went on for an age, with Olin Hennessy making an unbelievable save for the Orange Team to keep them in it. In a case of 'hurling fratricide' Dara Motherway scored the winning goal for Dylan's team, denying his brother Barry victory in the process, as the Orange team came out on top by the odd goal in nine. In the Group 2 Final, Adrian Galvin's Orange Team went head-to-head with Jack Wyse's Yellow Team, and again this was a very close affair, with the Yellows finishing stronger to take the honours on a 16-12 scoreline. Well done to all those who played over the past five weeks - we had some very competitive and exciting games and the standard of hurling improved greatly each week.
Winning Teams:
Orange 1 Team: Dylan Hogan, Olin Hennessy, Dara Motherway, Patrick Barry, Jonathan Guerin, Ryan Farquhar, Remy Bernard and Aaron Fitzgibbon
Yellow 2 Team: Jack Wyse, Ryan McCarthy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Liam Hoogstad, Robbie Treacy, Adam Danaher, Ben Jennings, Eoin Brenner and David Buttimer

Minor footballers have Great (Island) win!
In the Rebel Óg Eastern league on Saturday, our minors travelled to the Great Island of Cobh to take on the home side at the top of the hill. This was a game which we dominated from the throw in and displayed some fine quality moves and skill. We were rewarded with the two league points, winning on a scoreline of 5-6 to 1-2 after a very cold windswept hour - a test of endurance for the hardy band of followers!

Pain in Passage!
Our Fé 15 and Fé 13 footballers both faced uphill struggles (literally) at the top of the hill in Passage on Sunday last, when we played the locals in an Eastern Board League double-header. The fine February weather and the beautiful harbour views may have distracted our boys somewhat, because neither team really played to their potential. An additional factor may have been the absence of some of our mentors for both teams, who were otherwise engaged with our Junior A footballers in Doneraile (at least they won!) Both games followed a remarkably similar pattern with the home team racing in to an unassailable half-time lead, and while we actually outscored our opponents in the second half of each game, and finished strongly, ultimately both of our teams left pointless. However, there's much to be learnt in defeat also, so perhaps next day out will see better results for both teams. Many thanks to the Passage club for their welcome, and to Tom, the stand-in referee for the Fé 13 game, who even managed to wear out his first whistle!

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 13-02-2012

Mixed fortunes for our footballers
Our peileadóirí óga had mixed fortunes this past week in their ventures home and away. Wednesday evening saw our Fé 15 footballers begin their league campaign with a good win at home to Ballinora. Despite being behind at half-time we took full advantage of the wind in the second half and three early goals ensured that we finished with a comprehensive victory, on a scoreline of 4-4 to 1-3. Our Fé 16 footballers found out on Saturday that life will be challenging in Premier 1, as they went under to a strong Aghada outfit in Rostellan by 1-11 to 1-2. Ninety minutes later our Fé 13 footballers began their campaign at home to Castlelyons. The first half was very even, and going in trailing by just two points at half time (1-2 to 1-0), hopes were high that our team would take advantage of the prevailing wind favouring them in the second half. However, whether it was the step up of playing on the full pitch, or the inclement weather, or some other imponderable, the fact is that our second half performance was below par, with the result that our visitors Castlelyons took the spoils, finishing 2-5 to 1-0 ahead at the finish. Hopefully next weekend's game against Passage will bring an improvement.

Footballers get off to a winning start
Our Minor footballers got off to a winning start on Saturday last when they outplayed Carrigtwohill in the opening round of this year's league. Despite the inclement conditions, our boys were on top from the beginning and finished with a comprehensive victory under their belts, on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-4. Next up is an away fixture against Cobh on Friday week, February 17th. Shortly after the minors trooped off Páirc Uí Chinnéide, our Fé 14 footballers trooped on for their opening league game against near neighbours Kiltha Óg. Showing the positive effects of a few good training sessions, we outplayed our opponents, with our backs well on top, Killian and Cathal dominating midfield, and our forwards showing excellent form, in particular young Jamie Landers, Aaron Walsh and Andrew Leahy. Ag deireadh an chluiche bhíomar chun tosaigh 5-8 i gcoinne 0-3. A good start, with Erins Own up next on Saturday week, February 18th.
Panel: Dean Ward, Jack O'Rourke, Kevin Murphy, Christy Coughlan, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Emmet Barron, Fergal Smiddy, Cathal Deane, Killlian Treacy, Aaron Walsh, David Ogbebor, Jamie Landers, Keane Kelly Budds, Andrew Leahy, Eoin Treacy, Daniel Hickey, Sean Broderick, Padraig McCarthy, Luke Fogarty, Fionn McDonnell, Shane Kearney, Jamie Clifford.

Fé 14 Iomáint - Carrigeen
Our Fé 14 hurlers paid their third trip in as many weekends on Sunday last to Carrigeen on the north side of the Suir to take on Mount Leinster Rangers of Carlow in the final group game of the annual astro-turf tournament. As was the case in our previous two outings, our opponents were out of the blocks quickly and had 1-01 on the score board before the first two minutes were out. Despite this we battled on and soon got into the game through a well taken goal by Andrew Leahy. The first half continued to be open and several excellent saves by Aaron Walsh kept us in the game at the break. The score at half time was Killeagh-Ita's 3-03 to Mount Leinster's 4-05. The Carlow boys again started the second half as fast as they had the first and added a well taken goal early on followed quickly by another to stretch their lead. Our boys responded with a super goal by Killian Treacy and an excellent point by Cathal Deane but it was the Leinster boys who pulled away to record a deserved win on a final score of Mount Leinster Rangers 7-08 to Killeagh-Ita's 5-06. This result means that we go out of the competition at the group stage after recording one draw and two defeats from our three games. Our thanks go to the Carrigeen club for their hospitality once again, and thanks also to all the parents who made the extra-provincial journey over the last 3 weeks.

U-11s and U-12s get out!
Our U-11 and U-12 players will feel the sharp winds on Saturday next when they begin their outdoor training season at 10.00 a.m., under the direction of John, Colin and Stephen. It's hurling for the first few weeks, so bígí ann, a bhuachaillí!

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 30-01-2012

Success off the field - before a ball is struck!
Bhí lá iontach again Dé Sathairn seo caite nuair a d'fhéachamar siar ar an bhliain atá thart. Our 2011 campaign for our 12 year olds and younger was marked in style on Saturday last in our GAA Pavilion, with a disco and presentation of trophies for U-10 and U-12 Parish Leagues, while upstairs our Registration Day for 2012 gave the moms and dads an opportunity for a chat and a cup of tea, and a chance to dream of successes in the weeks, months, and perhaps years ahead! Bhí an siopa ar oscailt freisin, agus chualamar ceol tradisiúnta álainn ó Comhaltas Cilliath! Many thanks to all who made the event such a success, especially to Chairman Adrian Budds, Secretary Ursula Coleman and the many hard-working Juvenile committee members and parents who helped out in advance and on the day in any way. Many cups of tea were made and drank, many forms were filled in, and many left laden down with trophies, presented by our Club President Sean Treacy. We hope that everyone, young and old, left with happy memories of an afternoon well spent!

Fé 15 Peil League Final (2011)
Our on-field activities for 2012 began with the ending of a long campaign for our 2011 Fé 15 boys. On Sunday morning last we travelled to Inniscarra to bring a thirteen-month season to a close, contesting the Fé 15 Football League Final, with the blue and white of our hosts, the Inniscarra boys. It was the home side who adapted better to the inclement conditions- the slight falling mist and the heavy underfoot playing field. They dominated the opening fifteen minutes and had secured a tally of 1-4 on the board, without reply from the Killeagh-Ita boys. We looked in trouble as they continued with their more physical game plan and increased their lead with a trio of white flags. Despite this we plugged on and with seven minutes remaining on the clock, Brendan Delaney got us off the mark with a well-executed point. Inniscarra replied with one of their own at the far end of the field. It was Cian Greene who rounded off this half with a beauty as the half time whistle sounded, bringing to a close this disappointing first half and leaving the sides three green flags, or nine white ones, apart - 1-08 to 0-02 in favour of the hosts.
As we resumed our positions for babhta a dó, one would not believe it was the same group of lads who returned for Killeagh-Ita's boys as we upped the ante big time and were first out of the traps with an Eoghan Keniry point. Playing now with heart and vigour, we began to get to grips with the situation. These opening ten minutes were a ding-dong battle with both teams exchanging points, Cian adding our second. It was from here to the final whistle that we dominated proceedings and fought a great battle, holding Inniscarra scoreless for this period and closing the gap on the score board, with a further two points from the boot of Cian and a well taken goal from Eoghan. However the clock was ticking fast and the pressure was on for the boys in green to accelerate to the finish line. Alas, when the final whistle sounded we were still four points adrift, nach raibh sé sin uafásach! The little black book read Inniscarra 1-10 to Killeagh-Ita's 1-6. Martin O Brien of the Rebel Óg Central Board presented the cup to the joint captains of Inniscarra. Well done to our boys and to their mentors for their efforts throughout the year!

Fé 14 Iomaint
Our Fé 14 hurlers got their season off and running on Sunday January 22nd with a trip to South Kilkenny to take part in the annual astro-turf tournament hosted by Carrigeen GAA club. Our opponents on the opening day were Naomh Eoin from Belfast. This game was a tough, physical encounter with both sides getting stuck in from the very start. The Northern boys were quicker to settle as the Killeagh-Ita's lads showed a bit of rustiness after the winter break. This was evident as Naomh Eoin held a half time lead of 5-01 to 2-01. The second half was much better from our point of view but despite an improved showing we still trailed by 5 points with 4 minutes remaining. However a goal and two points were added in quick succession to ensure that we left with a well-deserved draw on a final scoreline of Killeagh-Ita's 7-06; Naomh Eoin 8-03.
We again travelled to Carrigeen on Sunday 29th January for our second game of the league against St. Mary's from Clonmel. We again started slowly and were a couple of points behind early on before we got into the game. The first half then ebbed and flowed and ended with a great goal by Killian Treacy which cut the deficit to just 2 points; Killeagh-Ita's 2-04 to St. Mary's 3-03. The Tipperary boys dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half and took control of the game as they added 3 goals and a point to their tally to open up a 9 point lead with just 5 minutes to play. Typically though this Killeagh-Ita's team did not give up and grabbed 3 goals of our own to draw level as we entered the last minute. The tide seemed to be with us at this stage and a winner for the boys in green looked likely. St. Mar'ys had other ideas though and launched one last attack with a long ball which was deflected to their corner forward who struck home for the winning goal just before the final whistle. This was a better team performance than the previous week, which is good to note. Aaron Walsh again did well in goal, Kevin Murphy was outstanding in the back line and was ably assisted by Jack O'Rourke while in the mid-field area Andrew Leahy and Emmett Barron worked hard throughout. In the forwards Killian Treacy was always a constant threat. Final Score: Killeagh-Ita's 6-05; St. Mary's 7-05.

And they're off!
The four-legged creatures were galloping and jumping at Knockane on Sunday afternoon at Killeagh Point-to-Points, which proved once again to be a fantastic day out in crisp'n'dry winter conditions for young and old. Prior to that, just after sunrise on Sunday morning, our U-13 to U-16 two-legged colts were out for an early gallop of roughly the same distance as the horses (3.2 miles) around the scenic paths of Glenbower Wood. This early-season training gets the lungs opened up and the blood pumping, so it's good to see this aerobic exercise complemented by physical development and flexibility training which began on Wednesday last in our indoor hall for the same age cohort, under the careful guidance of Colin Santry. As if that wasn't enough, our Under 13 and 14 footballers, with eager coaches Sean Lavery, Tadhg O'Connor and Brinsley Mac, got their season underway with a brilliant session on Saturday afternoon last. No resting up for these boys then, who will see action very shortly when the U-14 Football League commences on February 4th.
By the way, when the final race was run in Knockane, some of our younger sports stars decided to have their own 'Grand National' at the final fence. There were a few fallers and a few who might be subject to the old 'Stewards' Enquiry', as our photograph, taken by young Dara Motherway, shows!

Indoor Hurling
Our U-9 to U-12 hurlers (2000 to 2003 boys) began their 2012 Indoor League in Youghal GAA Hall on Monday from 6.00 to 8.00, and this will continue for the next four weeks. With a total of 64 boys swinging the hurls, there's plenty of 'timber' guaranteed. Meanwhile, our younger boys were back in action in Killeagh GAA Hall on Tuesday evening from 5.00 p.m., under the guidance of Seamus Considine, Michael Cowhig, Paudie Kearney and Adrian Budds.

Registration for 2012
Registration for the coming season can be paid from now on to Ursula Coleman. The fees remain the same as before for juveniles at €25 per player and €50 for a family of boys. For the first time in 2012, family membership is also available - this entitles two adults and any number of children in one family to club membership for the very reasonable rate of €80. We will be having a Registration Day on January 28th, with details to follow to parents of all young boys in the next week.

Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA notes for week beginning 09-01-2012

Happy New Year!
So 2012 has arrived! London will have the Olympics, Cork will win back Sam and Liam, and Killeagh will be County Champions. Ah, yes, life is so straightforward, isn't it! Now that the New Year is here, we can look ahead with hope and anticipation to a new season of activities for our younger folk. Over the holiday season, many of our buachaillí óga participated in the Annual Poc Fada from Mount Uniacke to Killeagh, with Gary Leahy, Shane Smiddy and Darragh Cahill winning the Juvenile competition. We also held a very successful Table Quiz Fundraiser in the Old Thatch on December 29th, with Dominic Fogarty, Emer Fogarty, Marion Sweeney and Ger Ahern finishing in front at the end of an exciting and enjoyable evening. Many thanks to the 32 teams who participated, to all those who sponsored prizes on the night, to our quizmaster Ted O'Brien for challenging and thought-provoking questions, and to the organising committee led by Paul Fogarty, Adrian and Ursula, who ensured the night was a great success. Pencil in Friday December 28th 2012 for the next instalment of this hugely popular event.

On the playing fields, our U-15 footballers of 2011 are patiently awaiting news of their County Football League Final, which will happen in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, our younger boys will re-commence their indoor hurling in Killeagh GAA Hall on Tuesday January 17th, starting at 5.00 p.m. for our very youngest (2006 and 2007 boys), with the 2005 boys at 5.45 p.m. and the 2004 boys at 6.30 p.m.
