Go Golfing with Killeagh GAA
Denise FitzGerald Reports

The village of Killeagh may be small, but the ambition, courage and determination of the people who live there is huge. For many of the residents, hurling and football is their hobby, their interest and their social lives. Their children grow BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS up with the knowledge that they, too, will get their chance to get involved, at whatever level, in our great Irish sport. Killeagh has produced the cream of GAA players over the years in Hurling, Football, Camogie and Ladies Football, including Killeagh legends such as Joe Deane, Mark Landers, Bernard Rochford, Marion Sweeney, Pt Moloney, Angtela Walsh and Mary O’Connor – who has twenty All Ireland medals in Camogie and Ladies Football.>

And so it was not unusual when, in 1998, a group of people got together and decided that their village and area deserved the very best in facilities for their dedicated and committed players. Facilities that would be there for future players of any level of play. Plans were drawn, discussed and agreed and the total outlay for this magnificent field of sport would be €1.2m. This did not deter, in any way, those involved and so commenced an awesome fundraising effort.>

The Killeagh GAA Golf Classic is now in its 14th year and has proven to be one of the most lucrative fundraising events on the Killeagh calendar. This year, the hurleys, sliothars and footballs will be put away again and the golf clubs taken out at Youghal Golf Club on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 8th, 9th and 10th. Ray Rochford told the East Cork Journal that this year, once again, the organising committee have excelled themselves in the arrangements for this Open 3 Person Team Event. The competition format is two scores to count at all holes, and Killeagh GAA are delighted to welcome any combination for this Open Three Ball - ladies, gents or ladies and gents together. The prizes include a first prize of Golf Equipment to the value of €900 (which is exchangeable for those who already have their top of the market Ping clubs!) and along with 2nd, Best Gross, Best Thursday, Best Friday and Best Saturday, there will be a Best All-Ladies, Best Non-GUI ,Best All Juvenile Team and the prize will go down to 35th place. ‘Sponsors’ Ray continued, “are so important to this fundraising event and this year we are very lucky and appreciative of our three main sponsors, Fermoy Nissan Ltd., Abbeylands ( GAP) Nursing Home in Kildorrery and ITW Graphics.” There are, of course, many more who support the Club each year and Ray extends a huge thank you to everyone.> Players, however, who come along each year to support the Golf Classic (many of whom only play golf once a year in this event) are the back bone of this fundraiser, and without them the Classic would not be a success.

Again this year, the Club appeals to all members, friends, golfers and non golfing supporters, to lend their very valued support to Killeagh GAA and come along to play in their Golf Classic. The mammoth development of the new facilities is almost completed, and support for the competition this year will bring the dream that bit nearer.> The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man’s determination, and with the help of their supporters, the hardworking, dedicated and community spirited men and women of Killeagh are about to make this dream a reality.
